Class 153

These vehicles were originally delivered as two-car units of "Super Sprinter" Class 155. A use was identified for single-car units and plans drawn to split the sets and add a second driving cab at the non-driving end. Problems then arose with the Trades Unions and the units became a momentary "cause celebre". The Unions argued, on health & Safety grounds, that the new cab - fitted into a smallish vestibule - did not offer sufficient protection to its members in the event of an accident. For a while the converted units ran as tow-car formations with the disputed cabs coupled together. Eventually agreement was reached and the class is used extensively either in single-car formation or to stregtnen 2-car sets of other classes.
